30. Cook Your Own Beans

beans-small-redBeans are nutricious and frugal, but they can be even more so if they are cooked at home. Plus, cooking dried beans rather than using canned beans saved the energy needed to process them and ship around the extra metal and water. Unfortunately they can take some time to cook through. I use my pressure cooker to make short work of them, but there are other ways to cook them without hovering over a stove-top checking them.

1. Dutch Oven (90 minute, No-Soak Beans)
